PROTEST FROM HAWKE’S BAY

HASTINGS, March 27

The Hawkes Bay Branch of the Farmers’ Union has forwarded the following resolution tfo the Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. D. H. Guthrie, and the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald “That this executive strongly protests to the Minister .in charge against allowing the Australian Freight Committee to absolutely control the steamers allocated to New Zealand for frozen products, and asks that the Imperial Government be approached with a view' to making different arrangements immediately. (2) This executive points out that half the meat in store at the present time is last season’s, and owing id this the Imperial Government’s produce is deteriorating: further, that space in the Hawkes Bay works is full. fn spite of only half the usual quantity of stock having been dealt with. (3) That owing to the shortage of shipSing allocated to Napier, largo Burners of stock are being railed to works outside Hawkes Bay; this is a very serious tax on the Hawkes Bay workmen. and a great loss to traders in , Hawkes Bay generally ,a further call on the railways, with depleted staffs and rolling stock, besides a wastage of coal, which is badly needed for other purposes. We urge upon you to *seo that a reasonable amount of space is allocated- Napier at once, as winter is approaching, and there is no appearance of relief so far. We notice that the Adting-Prime has feefred three extra ships for April, and demand at least our fair share of space on these.”
