SITUATION IMPROVING. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association) CAIRO. March 26. ' As"a result of strong military measures, the- situation is improving. The main railway and telegraph lines have boon restored in Lower Egypt, but Upper Egypt is still cut off. A relief force has arrived at Assiut, and the officer commanding reports that the situation is satisfactory. There was an outbreak at Port Said on March 21st. Coal coolies, under the influence of hashish, attacked the'residential quarter. Troops drove them off, killing six and wounding seventeen. Mobs attacked a relief train at Mitgmar on March 23rd. The troops inflicted a hundred casualties. It transpires that nine (not seven) British officers were murdered on the Cairo-Luxor express on March 15th. Large numbers of rioters have been arrested. Ex-Ministers, religious chiefs, and Nationalist leaders are appealing to the people for restoration of law and order. It is hoped that calm will soon be restored, but it will take the country years to recover from the effects of excesses. .
