SISTERS’ WIDOWED MOTHERS.
SEPARATION ALLOWANCE.
There is evidence in various cases that the regulations governing separation allowances for soldiers’ widowed mothers are not always fully understood. Here is the full text:—
Widowed mothers’ separation allowance of Is 6d a day is payable to a mother wkpis solely or_ partially dependent on cme son in the 'New Zealand Expeditionary' Force, provided he makes an .allotment'ln' her favour of not less than 3s a day. This provision, howevr, may bo proportionately, relaxed in particular cases where a soldier establishes that he is unable to' make such an allotment or can only majee a smaller allotment by reason of Hkvirtg to provide for the 'maintenance, of Txis- wife, or other dependents. In this respect'’ each case will be dealt. with on ’ its merits. A widowed)- mother with more ' than one single son, whether such other son is a. member of the Forces or otherwise, is not eligible for the allowance unless owing to . good and sufficient .reasons kuch ' other son is, ilotab'.b to contribute adequately to her support. a The general principle is that the alis given to supplement' the sol- [ dier s. allotment which/ 'the widowed piother .finds is in itself insufficient for her support. ‘ “Pai’tiail dependence’’ herein means any oner of the following.-conditions :-r-V (a) Widowed mother • with no capital who earns or' receives riot more ■ than 15s a w r eek from any source" whatever, ■ ■(b) Widowed. mother in jjosseesipn of capital not, exceeding J66QO/ 'but no. other income than interest on
such capital, ■ (c) Widowed mother in receipt, of. iticopift not • «xpeedingVlQs ; ‘«:-',.3sreek, ; ' bdt - who is in iposseseipn* of 'tapitat not exceeding (capital up W £SO not to be odrisidered as in-terest-bearing). ! ‘ (d) Widowed, mother in receipt of income _ riot exceeding . 15s a week, but *.in possession of capital ex-" ; ceoding £SO) to be treated as receiving interest at 5 per cent, on capital in excess :of > £SO. §ncri interest to b‘e. : added./to.’ income,, when the two together mrist not amount to more than 15s a week.
