WHEAT MARKET.

(United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. At a meeting of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union to-day, considerable indignation was expressed at the action of the Government in breaking its promise to pay 6s 4d per bushel for this season’s wheat and allow a free market. It was pointed out that many farmers had grown wheat, who would not otherwise have done so, owing to the promise of a free market. The opinion was also expressed that the promise as to next season’s crop was like piecrust, made to be broken. Mr G. W. Lil! suggested that all brandies o£ the Farmers’ Union should bo- communicated 1 with, to see if they would disregard the Government’s prices—in fact, defy and declare war on the Government.
