IMMIGRATION INVITED
MR MASSEY PROMISES WELCOME
A number of prominent men were asked by a London newspaper to define the quality most likely to lead to success in life. A contribution attributed to the Prime Minister of New Zealand includes the following; "“I should say: ‘A character people can always rely on.’ First,' a man dr woman must have what we generally term a ‘good character ;’ he must be known, as honest and straight dealing, as trust, worthy and reliable; as self-reliant to a certain degree, and l resolute to do i his best.
I “That is, at any rate, the type of I man we want- to come to us in the Dominion over the seas. The ; day for the wastrel, for spendthrift, for the ' ne’er-do-well being sent over to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand because be is a failure at home, because he has lost his character ‘there, because it is hoped, that ‘people abroad will not be so particular,” is quite over. "To-day, we in the farther parts of the great British Etopire are willing to receive and welcome men and women, boys and girls, with open arms, and to offer them every chance of making names, fortunes, (splendid homes with ns. But they must be men and women, boys and girls, of high character; they must be trustworthy and have t some self-reliance: they must be workjers, and not shirkers.”
