MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waimea (County Council was held to-day. Pre-' sent: Councillors .Hi. Everett, A. JDrummond, T. .Hewetson, G. Macmahon, A. P. Allport, and <H. Tunniclifi. The County chairman (Cr. P. Best) was granted, leave of absence owing to indisposition, and Cr. Everett was voted to the chair. FINANCE. The bank .pass book showed .balances at follows: — Dr. £ s. d. A discussion took place on the financial position of the Board, the actingchairman (Cr. Everett) pointing out that thev had that day passed account amounting to J82210, and had: nearly reached the limit of their overdraft. "He said- they were trying to keep up motor roads with a farmers* roads rate. Councillors agreed that it would be necessary to go slow with the expenditure for some time. ;EI>.GINEER'S REPORT. The County Engineer ifMr G. S. Whiteside) in his .monthly Teport stated inter alia:—Maitai Riding: The , large slip on the Wangamoa hill had 'been repaired by excavating- the road wider. Surface work had proceeded between Rai Saddle and! Nelson City boundaryi. On the Bishopdale road seven trucks of Brightwater gTavel had "been distributed at a cost of 9s 9d per cubic yard. The Stoke road had ibeen partially •patched with Rabbit Island gravel. He inspected tUe stop-banks erected by- the landholders on the east side of the Waimea river, and found the work had not .been shirked. The Council is paying a quota of the cost for the ben-e-----fite the Appleby-Richmond road will derive therefrom. Wai-iti Riding: Be surveyed the levels of the proposed drain from Brightwater.' corner along the road towards Waimea West, and the estimate of cost works out as follows— 33£ chains ditch, £7O. The ditcb ■would require to be fenced to prevent j ■accidents, say for 30 chains at a cost of £3O. Another culvert would. l .be required across the road at the outlet, cost say >&e did not give the cost of maintenance, making) entrances to residences- cut off from road, or damage to lands having- to take extra flood -water. Motupiko Riding: Steps had IbeeiT removed audi a culvert renewed on the road to Bowron's, Tophouse. Metal patching- had;' been done in various parts of the riding. . The piles and '.'stringers for Hanron's footbridge were on the site. Wangapeka Riding: Rive; ; protection work has been done oppositf Bigg's, helow ' Tapawera bridge, and similar work was being carried out near-.-the Afotueka river ford close to Falkner's Bluff. Motueka Riding: Mer ailing _ and general, repairs had beer done in various parts. The grader wa.now working "GjP u y Alexander's Bin* on its way. to Nigatimcti ; (Moutere Rid ing: The Motueka (Harbour Board pro posed making a charge of 6d per yarc for metal off Kina beach. Arising out of the repont it was resolved :—That Mr ; Webby's tender fo; metalling the Stoke-Richmond road at 8s a yard, the Council to allow thefree use of traction engines and Trucks be declinted; also it-hat* Mr Benson's tender to deliver Boulder Bank metal a? near high water as possible at 6 S a yard be,declined.. . Or. Allport; referring to the Mo-tueka-Riwaka bridge 1 , said he did' not think construction work should come out of maintenance rartes. There should be a separate fund for construction work. . At different times the Council spent large suras on trunk roads and bridges —first in one part of the county and then in another. It had heea previously stated that there would be provision for £SOOO expenditure on such works this year. - Cr. Allport said the amount received in rates would not permit of construe- ■ ' tion work: The stated that he had ir •speo'ed ' Harley's road and could no* see that excessive damage had beedone by the carting of flax ; but he hac given instructions that no more .h ax wa& to be -carted till the end of September. • ''.'•' The Engineer suggested that there should be a uniform wage of 10s a day in the county, and that there should be •• -"liding scale for horses. Cr. Allport moved and Cr. TunnicJiffe seconded that the - Engineer be instructed to pay a uniform rate of 10si i. -lay; that 6s be paid for one horse, 5 c tor a * second horse, and 4s for a thir" horse. / ■ ■ The chairman moved as an amendment and Cr. Hewetson seconded thache Engineer be given discretionary ' power to pay not more than 6s for each horse employed, and that the wages be 10s a day. Cr. Tunnicliffe thought the amencftinent would meet the case, and therefore.would support it. The amendment wag carried on the Voices and again as the substantive motion.' On the: motion of Cr. Hewetson it •was resolved that Cr. Best and himself and the Engineer interview the Motueka Harbour Board in regard to the metal from Kina Beach. ' CORRESPONDENCE. Amongst the letters dealt with were the following :—- From Public- Works Department stating that the Estimates for the ensuing year were being prepared, and asking for a list of /works which were really urgeni. and which should receive consideration according to the appropriations 1917-18, —Application to be made for certain grants. . From Mr U. 'P. Hudson. M.P., re disposal of orofits from wool sales, and asking the Council to let him know if it approved of the proposal. ; —Cr. Macmahon said the Council was not direct' ]y interested in the matter, but farmer? throughout the co U ntty were supporting the movement —Resolved tha.t a reply to this effect be sent to Mr Hudson. Richmond, re water backed on to his property at Tahuiia, expressing surprise at the Council's reply, and asking the Council to reconsider the matter. —It was resolved that a conference of the County Council. Stoke Road Board, Tahuna Progressive Association, and Mr Richmond, be held to discuss the whole matter, Cr. Everett opposing. From Miss F. H. Smith, Appleby, asking that wire protection be put on the sides of Appleby Bridge for the safety of school children.—Engineer' to inquire. (Left sitting.)
