THE GOWAN ROAD.

GOVERNMENT GRANT OF £2CO.

■■.. Mr T. A. H. Field, M.P., has received the following letter from Sir William Eraser, Minister of Public Works, which speaks for itself:— / '''You forwarded me on 13th April a letter which you had received from Mr E. W. Hodgson, of Wakefield; in which ho expressed the opinion that the expenditure of a sum of £IOO to £2GO .in patching .and improving a fow'bad places would render tho Gowan road passable. for traffic—presumably for motor trnfnc. 'I havo obtained reports from'the"Resident Engineer regarding tho condition of the road, and find that if is in, good order at prosent for an unmetalletl rorid, but is soft in some portions as a result ■of heavy rains. The estimated cost of metalling these soft patches and effecting other minor repairs is £2OO, and an authority for that amount has been issued to tho Resident Engineer ,who will have the work undertaken in tho spring, when it call be moro efficiently and economically performed than in winter. _ "As you are doubtless aware, it is visual for local bodies to find half cost of repairs and metalling ,but T am providing the whole of tho money in tins instance, as tho County Council does not receive rates from the r block at pieSe Whilo it is unfortunate that the settlers of the district could gt■ gri. the benefit.of tho improvement bcfoic winter tho grant is otherwise very B wlw factory aiid it' may be hoped, that nexti ™er Kotoroa will be easily acco*bio.
