PRESIDENT WILSON AT NEW YORK

NEW YORK, May IF President "Wilson has arrived at Nev York, where h e ' will address a Red Cross meeting to-day. The United Press correspondent say? President Wilson will point out that th e United States must prepare for further sacrifices in order to frustrate Germany's aggressive plans. The United States is preparing for a mighty stroke before the close of 1919 The War Department has asked the Shipping Board to increase its 1919 uLans by 60 per cent, in advance of the contracts let, in anticipation of the enormous .force of Americans which is expected to be sent to the West front. The President will emphasise that a just peace is possible only' by crushing German militarism.

Italy has informed the United States that the presence of American troops on the Italian front is much_desired. The Italian officials feel that the sight of the Amp rican flag in Italy would have- a good moral effect o n tlio Italian troops and people. A few thousand American troops would be sufficient. The Tribune states that Kerensky is expected to arrive at an American port from Russia in c few days.

Mr Taft, in a speech at the Philadelphia Win-the-War Convention, said the UnJted States would have aii army of ■5,200,000 men by the end of this year, and 5,400,000 by the end of 1919.
