SIR STANLEY MAUDE.
A FATAL COURTESY,
In moving, .the graut of £25,(XX)t<) fcho -widow of Lieutenant-General Sir F Stanley Maude, Mr Lloyd George refeixed to /the •will o£ the deceased soldier, recently - published, -Which showed that there was only £SIOOO to dispose of.
After praising his* tmilitary genius \he Prime Minister added that Sir Stanley Maude's real greatness was displayed in the use which he made of the victory after it had been obtained showed as much wisdom as an administrator as he displayed skiill as a general. 'While ruling with a firm hand, he -won the esteem and affection of that gifted' but suspicious race, not merely by the equity of his r'ule, but by the intelligent sympathy whic 1 - ha displayed. He possessed that rare tact which is a blend of gentle--nes-s and understanding. He died a victim to the inbred courtesy of his fine character. I heard the story the other day from a inember of his 'staff. Se yisitei '» plague-stricken area at the invitation of its inhabitants. They were anxious.to give hii.i a' welcome for the many kindnesses v *iich be had and they gave Mm. a great welcome. Thev offered hi n a. smalt. act om and although be so well peril that jhe lhad| actually forbidden any soldier in hi* escort to eat or drinjfc* -while on thai visit, he himself ran the risk rather tha n siurfc the susceptibilities of a people Who were anxious to givG him a welcome. There was cholera in the cup, and he died a few days later. I know not what destiny may have in store lor the famed land which he con,of two:things I am .certaif.. The first is that, the whole coirrsevof its history will be changed for the better as a result of the victory and "he rnle'of Sir- Stanley " >Matnse," "and the second is that his name will always be cherished by the inhabitants of that land as that of the greatest conquror who ever entered' the gates of Baghdad.'V . (Cheers),- - ■•
