AUCKLAND, May IS. The Commission of Enquiry into the causes and prevention of accidents to waterside workers opened its sittings to day. (Evidence was given on behalf 01 the Waterside Workers' Federation, witnesses relating their experiences of cases of unclutching of winches, insufficient lighting of hold*; audi hatch ; ways, and defective ladders in holds and their ideas as to the need for closer inspection of cargo-handling work and a better system of hatchway nets- Some; witnesses said they thought the workers should appoint their own inspectors of gear.
