Two hump-backed whales were sighted in the Sounds, close to Picton harbour, the other afternoon (states the Press), and a motor chase was soon arranged by some of the Perano party who were in town. - The whales (a cow and calf) eluded capture by dodging into the many inlets of the Sounds, although shots were fired. Word was sent down to the whaling station, and the chase was renewed early on Saturday morning. Some exciting events followed, one boat being almost overturned by the calf, and a harpoon being twisted by the mother. All efforts to capture the pair were futile, and when last seen the whales were making for. the open sea by the north entrance at break-neck speed.
