In the «tory Bill Carmody. a likeable voung chap. is wasting his - time, strength, and money in Broadway restaurants." The girl he loves. Ethel Alanton. is alternately delighted with Ill's nrowess at football and disgusted with his mode of life. His father loses st large amount of money because the youth forgete to deliver some bonds entrusted to him. To cap the climax he gets into a nghfc in a cafe, .and with difficulty escapes arrest. Bill and Ethel quarrel, and he make up hi* mind to leave home and "make good" in his own way. "Bill" finds work in a lumber camp in the great North-west. His courage" and bravery grow as his sinews harden. "The Promise" contains the lesson, told in a story of breathless interest, that a man can always "come back." if he is willing to do so. and that'the best panacea for the ills of civilisation is hard work, done with a stout heart in the open air. The scenery in this picture is very fine. There are also some good supporting pictures.
