Findl-ay -appointed eighth assistant; Westport D.H.S., second secondary and commercial instructor, Mrs L.V- .Hurley offered her services for war period, and -was a-ppointed. I-t was resolved to draw the attention of the Truant- officer to the poor attendance at certain schools in the country districts. A circular was received from the Minister of Education suggesting that waste spaces in school grounds might be utilised for 'growing cereals. Resolved that the circular be forwarded to all committees.

The Town Committee wrote asking that Nelson cityi should be declared an urban school district. Mr Boyes said he bad brought the matter before the Board in order that the position of himself and- Mr Lock could be defined. It was resolved that the mat-ter be referred to the Education Department for tin opinion. iMr -Bove3 referred to the number of uncertificated teachers in the Board s employ. He said some had not got cerapparently were not going to toy and obtain them as loug as they were drawing their present salaries. He moved that all uncertificated teachers in the employ of the* Board be required to sit for file I>. certificate next January, or present themselves for examination before the Inspectors in December. A. letter was read from the Bainham Committee in regard- to the dental inspection of school children. It was sta ted that the Department- intended to deal with this matter -a r t T <Tr the war. 'He had applied for a visit from the -medical officer in June next.

A connplaint <by IMr A. Wilkinson, Murchison, was received. jA complaint by (Mrs ißroad. Owen Junction, was referred to the Committee.

A complaint by a Committee as to teacher's severity to children was referred- 'to Mr Scantlebury for report. Mr A. A- Grace and Mrs Hodgson offered' the 'Board 40 copies of the book of poems published by the late Mr WC. Hodgson, Inspector of Schools. —Resolved to accept ithe offer with i/nanks. . Applications for leave of absence were .<r ran ted to 'Miss Farnie, iNelson ; Miss Walshe, Miss Jordan, Brooklyn ; Mrs. Pownall, Ngatimoti. Art application for conveyance of children'," Upper Tasman, was -granted oil the usual conditions, and a claim .by J. Croawell, Longford, in respect of a similar matter, was not entertained.. 14. was resolved to write to the Hailway 'Department requesting that the train.' be stopped l at Miko for the convenience of children.

An application from J. Menzies. Westport, for increase of contract price for conveyance of children was referred to ■the tDepartmezil 1 - Appointments were made as follows /YVai-iti, Miss Gr. F. 'Rowley; Murchison, Miss A. W Gibbs; Long Plain, Mr F. A. Straek ; Ngatimoti, Mrs Pownall ; Rotokohu, Miss Levestam. The resignations of Mr H. H. Horner (Wai-iti), Miss Fletcher (Westport), Miss Small (Nelson) and Miss Rowley (Kiwi) were accepted. Mr Boyes gave/notice to move at the next meeting that the Board have placed before it a list of buildings throughout the district so that a scheme may be framed for the purpose of making provision for systematic repairs and paint-

ing. .Mr Scantleburv moved according to notice that all resolutions in connection with the site of the proposed new school at Mangahua landing be rescinded. The motion was seconded by Mr Smith and opposed by the chairman and Messrs Boves, Lock, Baigent and Symes. The motion was put and lost on the voices.

Mr Symes slated that £520 had been -subscribed by the Tasnmn people for a .school library and he asked and was informed that Government subsidy would be available, conditionally The Board rose at 3 p.m.
