VIOLENT ARTILLERY STRUGGLE

ON THE CHEMIN-DES-DAMES. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association {Rec. iMay 21, 1.5 p.m.) LO(NO>ON, May 20. A French communique states :' There is a -violent artillery struggle in the region Oi ■'Ghemiii-des-Da.'mes on the whole front between !taborelle, Corney and Hurtebise. An enemy attempt on the salient at Labovelle was easily repulsed. A small action enabled us to carry some elements of trenches north-west of Laffeux Mill. NO INFANTRY ACTIONS.LONDON, May' 20. A French communique says there has been no infantry action. The artillery duel is sometimes violent on the Chemin-des-Dames, and at Hurtebise and Californie Plateau. GERMAN REPORTS. {Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, May 18. A German official message says : ."We repulsed French attacks at Braye, Craonelle, Craonne, and northward of Sapigneul. We stormed a trench eastward of Laroyere farm." A - German official message says : "We captured a trench near 'Braye arid repulsed an attack at Winterburg. We brought down ten aeroplanes yesterday." (Rec. May 21, 1,5 p.m.) LONDON, May 201 A German communique says : —We maintained a captured position near Cratte against strong French attack. The euemy lost eight aeroplanes.- ', '•
