APPEAL BY MR HUGHES
(SHORTAGE FOR TRANSPORTS ANT) MUNITION'S. (Press Association.— Copsbigbt. J MELBOURNE, Nov. 16. Mr Hughes, addressing the coal conference, said that unless they got coal the small arms factory must close <ju Saturday. There was only 800 tons available for transports, and the wheat ships were due. Without wheat the war could not eontimie. The miners' representatives repeated their demands, declaring that they were locked out. The proprietors said that the precedent to a settlement was that all men should resume work at the same time. PROPOSAL BY MR HUGHES. IMMEDIATE RESUMPTION* AND ARBITRATION'. MELBOURNE, Xov. 16. After a lengthv discussion,.Mr Hughes proposed that the men be recommended to resume work immediately on condition that the Arbitration Court or a special tribunal hear the case on tne same -day as work ds resumed, presumably Monday. „ The conference adjourned ivntU tomorrow to consider the proposal.
