DOMINION; CONFERENCE. The ann-ual conference of delegates of the 'Ohamoers of (Commerce of the Dominion will be held at Wellington on Wednesday and Thursd'ay of next week. JTesterday the Council of the Nelson Chamber met to consider the preliminary agenda paper for the conference. The subjects appearing on the paper were considered so important that it was decided to hold a general meeting of members of tne Chamber on Monda\ evening next so that all interested might have an opportunity of expressing their views_ and also of framing resolutions for the guidance of the Nelson delegates, who will be the President (Mr O. Richmond Fell) and another member as arranged by the President. One matter that -particularly, affects Nielson is the remit from the Nelson u-amber with regard to excess profits taxation. The remit, which was drawn up : by a sub-committee of the Council, specially set up to consider this taxation, is as follows: "Whilst approving .)f taxation of war profits, this Council s of opinion - that the excess profits taxation should be abolished on these grounds: (l) That the operation is unfair and inequitable; (2) that jt tends to check and hamper industry and the development of new business." It has aeen pointed out that in regard to orchard lands the. operation of this taxation may prove a great drawback to the Nelson district. Napier and Wellington have remits on ■,he subject of scientific research. There ;.re a number of remits on the subject it "British Trade Protection and Trade - relations," and other matters that will ■ome under review appear under the leadings of : —Bankruptcy; voluntary 'ribunals of arbitration; company law md registration of firms; bills of lading, \ shipping, etc.; postal and telegraph services ; naturalisation ; commercial defence fund; Commercial Trusts Act; railways and roads; Board of l rade; holidays ; daylight saving; metric system; interest on deposits when etc.
