GREAT DAMAGE TNI PESLORUS ', DISTRICT. ' HEAVY LOSSES. Tvelsdniiiis returning overland from -Christchnrrh .via the Rai' Valley report that the trip through the (Rai is still attended with some danger owing to the damage clone "to the road by the recent flood. On all sides there are evidences of -■ the s?verity of the flood. There were heavy losses of sheep and cattle. 'One 'settler near iCanvastown lost the wnole of his, dairy herd of 20 cows. Other individual settlers suffered serious losses. Huge logs are in ali di- - rection3. miles of fencing have been swept away, .and there have, been huge on the" road, which are a danger to travellers unless care is exercised., -v house near the Canvastown iHotel was practically demolished by a slip, the debris from which, passed clean through the house. There are between 30 and 40 refugees at the hotel, their homes having been more or less wrecked by the flood and slips. More slips are likely, h.- a number of "creeps" were observed, some of them several acres in -extent. Some or these have already shifted several feet. On .the bank along the War.Lamoa r&ad in" many plaoes the trees are now horizontal instead of perpendicular, and -will sooner or later come away altogether.
