Sir Ernest Shackleton- returned after a third fruitless attempt to rescue the marooned men, at Elephant Island. The Emma was forced back by heavy, gales, and the ice conditions rendered' approach to the island impossible. Pack ice was encountered north of the island which it was impossible to break. The shii was badly damaged and her engines were injured, and she had. to proceed under sail.
