'hall and smashed the windows. Several arrests were made. CONSCRIPTION IN AUSTRALIA, MR HUGHES'S ATTITUDE. (Rec. 10.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE. This Day. Speaking .at a, reception. Mr Hughes made the most significant reference to conscription since his return. He said he would have them believe that whatever he thought.necessary to be done to save te conntry he would not hesitate <o ptrt to the people. Referring to the Empire sugar scheme, Mr Hughes said- the object- was the production within- the Empire of the sugar required !by tHe Empire, with preference for sugar produced in the Empire, or the countries of the Allies and the exclusion of enemy sugar for a period of not less than five years after the war. AN EMPHATIC STATEMENT. (Rec. 10.15 a.m.) PERTH, This Day. At' a.; soecial meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the President said that -is a result of his visit to England Mr Hughes would declare in favour of conscription."
