Further details of the family fatality atf Martakau show . tliat' Edward Bates, formerly of" JPetone, -with his wife and two sons, aged 16 an-d 6, were living in a tent in rough country: eight miles back from ilanakau. Owing to the -dangerous proximity of a 'big rata it was decided to shift camp. "While the elder son was assisting a number of bushfellers to prepare _a new site the huge rata seven feet m _ diameter fell right across the tent, bringing tons of earth on top of and completely burying the tent and the three inmates. The bodies of the father and' eon were recovered, but the mother's body -has not yet 'been found.
