(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

LONDON, Aug. 3. A German communique says:—Between the Ancre and the Somme our curtain fire checked- the enemy. Heavy English attacks broke down astride the Al-bert-Bapaume road and east of Trones. The French made seven attacks between Maurepas and the Somme, but only succeeded in penetrating Monacu Farm. A Freinch advance was repulsed at Burleux and Estrees. The enemy on- the right bank of the Meuse got a- footing, on Pepper Ridge and iiu the front trenches southwest of .Fleury. The enemy was. 'heavily repulsed at Thiaumont. south-east- of Fleury. ENEMY'S LOSSES AT MONACU FARM. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association ) LONDON, Aug. 4. It is confirmed that the German units engaged in the region of Monacu Farm have been relieved in consequence of their heavy losses since Monday. Throughout the day the enemy's artillery maintained a 'barrage west and south-west of Pozieres, and shelled Longueval, Mametz, and Caterpillar Woods. v ; Further north we shelled the villages near Arras and Arment-ieres, and drop- i ■ped- bombs on the outskirts of the vil- ! lages without doing damage. In the Givenchy district we bombarded' the enemy's lines at Hohenzollern Redoubt. At the Loos salient there was considerable trench mortar activity on both sides. Two enemy aeroplanes were brought down in the northern section of our line, one of which seems t-o be of a new pattern. Three of our machines were brought down by the enemy's gunfire. WHAT THE GERMANS THINK OF THE ANZACS. (Australian and "??.Z. Cable Association.)

ROTTERDAM, Aug. 4. The Berlmger Tageblatt's correspondent admits that sharpshooters were specially placed on the 'breastworks to •pick off Anzac officers.

He adds: "I won't say anything against the Australians. They are strong fellows. We don't like thenfaces and eyes; they are not the kind of people that appeal to us. They are good marksmen and fearful fighters, but not a single Bavarian fears them." FRENCH SUCCESSES ON" THE' •MEUSE. FLEURY COMPLETELY REOCCU•PIED. (Australian and N.Z.
