SPEEDING-UP HRGED
DEPUTATION TO' THE MINISTER,

WELLINGTON, This Bay. A deputation comprising Messrs Hudson, Colvin, Maginnity, .Snodgrass, Leaver (Mayor of Westport), and Witty (Christchurch) interviewed the . Hon. W. HI. Herries yesterday and urged reconsideration of the Department's decision i on the question of speeding- up trains between Nelson and Glenhope, which connect with the through motor service to Mtorchison, Westport, and Keefton. Members of the deputation pointed out the inconvenience of the present timetable, and numerous stoppages. The Minister said the Department would do all it could: in the matter, short of incurring heavy extra expenses. 'He suggested that the deputation should interview Mr Hiley, General Manager. The deputation accordingly saw Mr Hiley, who promised to obtain a fresh report on the matter and see what could be done. He also promised that as soon as the (Picton andi Greymouth sections were finished, that the Nelson section would 'be equipped with the Westinghouse brakes, which would 1 assist to shorten the time occupied by the run. Sir Joseph Ward stated in the Home of Representatives last night that tli<j Government required to "borrow £8,000,000 or possibly more this year. Details, he said, "would be advertised next week.
