SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR
PUBLIC GATHERINGS. Public gatherings will be held throughout the Empire today, which is the second, anniversary of the declaration of war,. At aid meetings the following resolution will be submitted : "That on this, the second anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war, this meeting of citizens records its inflexible determina- ,' tion to continue to a victorious end the struggle in maintenance of those ideals of liberty and justice which are the common and sacred cause of the Allies." The gathering in Nelson will be held at the Church Steps at 8 o'clock' this evening-. All citizens are. requested to assemble. Addresses will be delivered bv the Mayor (MrC. J. Harley), Cr. W. S. Hampson, and Mr J. S. Evans, S.M. There -will bo a parade of all units of the National Reserve, and the 12th Regiment Band will also attend. ■Residents of Richmond and surround-' ing districts are requested to assemble it the Town Hall, Richmond, at 8 p.m. for a similar purpose.
The .following resolution was passed by the directors of the Nelson District Fruit-packers Ltd. on the occasion cf their first meeting being held on the second anniversary of the War, August 4th, 1916:—"As representatives of a very large majority of the fruitgrowers in the Nelson district, we desire to pledge ourselves and our shareholders to do all that lays within our power, collectively or individually, to assist the luthorities in bringing the present war to a successful issue. We also pledge ourselves to use whatever means are considered necessary to urge itlie authorities only to agree to a basis of peace that -trovides for the punishment of the perpetrators of such foul deeds as the murder of Nurse Cavell and Captain Fryntt."
