WAR EXPENDITURE
THE CHIEF ITEMS.

A statement of expenditure under the head of war expenses account from the beginning of the war until' March- 31st was presented to the House yesterday! by the Defence Minister. The total expenditure was £8,015,315. The /following are some of the: more important items:
Expenses of camps and expenditure on recruiting, £303,736. Purchase of 'equipment, including boots, clothing, waggons, carts, etc., -£993,653. Forage, £228,892. Home defence, £193,669. Hospital ship Maheno, £84,793. Hospital ship Mnrara, £45,133. Medical, including fees, equipment for hospitals, field hospitals, and ambulances, surgical instruments, comforts, etc., £105,509. Pay, £3,110,054.
Postage and telegrams, including preparing war news cables- for.-despatch, to New Zealand and ca-ble ; charges thereon £24,405. Prisoners of war, £23,629. Purchase of horses anid expenses incidental, - £196,077. Rations, £461,555. Transport, including, charter of steamers, £1,854/242. ' g .Distribution of war news and casualty telegrams" in New Zealand, £160,000. Comforts for wounded: soldiers and relief of distress in Belgium, £72,500. Relief of Belgian distress (another app ropria tion), £20,000.
