NEW ZEALAND AND THE WAR.

THIS evening Nelson, as a unit of the Empire, is to give expression to its determination to continue its 'best endeavours in the struggle until the war is brought to a victorious end. Th_> fine response from this district has placed it second to none hi practical demonstration of its loyalty. -At such times as these, thoughts turn to those who have lost those dearer than life itself. There are many such and the numbers are increasing daily. But there is the knowledge of° duty" done. Those who suffer most would rather have it so than that their sons should! have shirked their duty to their country. They know that the men who have fallen have given their lives in the greatest cause of liberty and for the triumph of right. They know, too, that by their deeds these men have won for New Zealand a name that will never die. 'On the shores of Gallipoli deeds of unsurpassed daring were performed, and now our New Zealanders, together with their Australian brothers and the brave men from the 'Rome-land-, are showing the greatest, emu-age on that historic ground in north-west France wluch, centuries ago, echoed to the trumpets at Ci-ecy and at Agincourt. Great as have been' the achievements of Britons in the past, the deeds of to-day equal anything in history. It is not that Britons glory in the contest, hut, the call of duty has been clear, and the sword will not be sheathed until victory is won. There will be many a reinforcement draft yet to I leave these shores, but the men will go forth conscious of the duty they owe to ! their country) and to the dead.
