MOTUEKA HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING

The ordinary meeting of the Motueka Ifuxbour Board was held on Thursday 'ast, when the following members were present: Messrs Horatio Everett (chairnan), J. A. Guy, S. L. Rowling, H. 0. Holdaway, A. G. Herrick, and C. H. Mackav. Absent, with leave of absence, Mr R." P. Hudson, M.P. Accounts imountimr to £lO4 6s 4d were passed for payment, leaving credit balances at ;he bank amounting to Wharfinger reported inter alia for the nonth as follows :—Wharf revenue revived for the month amounted to £l2l 16s Od, compared with £96 5s 6d for .he same period of last year. Thirtyhree vessels entered the port, namely, 27 steamers and 6 sailers, with a, total aggregate tonnage of 2466 tons. From the Board's solicitors, Messrs "Saston and Nicholson, covering plans "or signature and registration of land,, übdivision, and roads, etc. From Harbours Association of New Zealand, enclosing that body's annual --alance-sheet and giving information re lues on transports. From Waimea County Council, speci'ving requisite work to be done by the >oard subject to the Council taking •ver the control of streets xunder the board's subdivisional scheme in connection with the township of Port Mo■ueka. From the Marine Department, coverng letter and plan supplied 'by Thomas N T. Nalder, suggesting the re-establish-nent of beacon lights at the old harbojr vnd asking for information on" the mater.

From Captain G. Williams, master of Vhe ketch Comet, and nine other ca,> 'ains of small vessels, petitioning for he reinstallation of- the beacon lights at he old harbour. From, the Nelson District Fruitpackers Ltd.. requesting the Board, as an interested body to appoint delegates to attend '. meeting in October to consider the natter of holding annual provincial fruit hows, alternately at Nelson and Moueka.

Hudson, M.P.. a uemter of the Board, stating that 'ie had had a conversation with Mr Mace and< Mr Pattie. late Chairman oi the Board, and that he concurred with heir suggestion that Mr Mace should nterview the Government Inspecting Engineer and the Government Engineer-s-Chief, re the latter's report and )e----?ommendations in the matter of imirovements proposed to Motueka harbour.

From Mr R. P. Hudson, M.P., a telegram announcing the passage .of the "-Jill bv Parliament, giving the Board luthority to raise an additional loaiu of 66000 for harbour and. wharf improvements. The following resolutions were passed : That repairs to a wharf pile accidentally damaged by a steamer, be effected -mder the supervision of the wharfinger. That the secretary prepare an estimate of alternate cost of erecting a derrick ind travelling cargo crane at the wharf. That a rejily be forwarded, to the Marine Department, pointing out the facts regarding the discontinuance of beacon lights at the old harbour and that the installation of other leading lights at tho new harbour are adequate, ilso that a similar reply 'be supplied to the petition of masters of small sailing vessels. That the entrance to the old wharf be fenced off against use by the public and shipping, and that steps be taken in legal -performance therewith. That the assistant wharfinger Le granted his annual holiday. That the dredge and other plant used

in connection with harbour construction be atended to under supervision of the secretary.

That the charge to lousiness firms for fresh water supplied be 5s per 1000 gallons. That plans in connection with subdivisional scheme be signed in order and the Board's seal affixed thereto. That the claim of Mr G. Chant be referred to the secretary for enquiry. That the subject of the Waimea County Council's conditions;required before ' taking over control of streets be deferred, pending the chairman's enquiries on certain matters. That the request of the Motueka* Borough Council to take 'boulders from the foreshore be acceded to. That the chairman and Messrs Holdawav and Mackay be appointed to .the conference to be held in October re provincial fruit show, etc. That Mr Hudson, M.P., be thanked for his assistance iii connection with the £6OOO Loan Bill.

That in appreciation of the chairman's,, efforts, a vote of thanks be accorded him in the matter of the authority of extension of the Board's borrowing powers. That further consideration of letter from the Harbour Association's solicitors be deferred. That some ornamental trees be planted on the Board's land, to be left with M: Herrick and the secretary to take action.

That noxious growths on the Board's lands be cleared under the supervision of the secretary . The finding of the arbitrators appointed in the matter of the settlement between the Nelson Harbour Board and the Motueka Board was read. The chairman recommended the Board to agree to the principal of the arbitrators' findings, and it was "ultimately resolved : That the award of the arbitrators allowing payment of £345 to the Nelson Board re conditions regarding the dredge and machinery, but that the matter of rebate alleged to have been made by the Nelson Board, for rent be held over for further investigation.
