This' ie--1 eased, the liquid fire, and then I, got a glimpse of what ; hell must be like. As, a torrent of shells fell, great sheets «.f llame rose up and. the ground became a whirling sea, of fire.' In the midst of ■t, the Germans, like h'vih.y torches, were dvin# horribly. One spurn like a.' top lid straggled* superhumahlv,- "but finall'.y fell into the' pool of fire. Others rolled.' on the dry ground, but the liquid' enveloped them. There was' a dreadful Stench of burning flesh which was'indescribable. As I scrambled back to the lines the awful and" unforgettable screams of the dying rose above the din of the battle."
