PERMANENT PICTURES.

The star feature at the Empire Theatre to-night, when there will be a complete change of programme, -will be a Reliance four-act drama entitled "Out of the Depths." The principal character is a religious imposter, Davids, an itinerant revivalist, who while visiting a Welsh village fascinates a young girl Daire Vincent, and persuades her to elope with him. After a time Daire her child are left alone in a city, and to save herself from starvation the g:il ibecomes a singer in a dancing-hall. At home Daire has had a friend called Rosa whom she loved dearly. In turn Davids meets and loves Rosa, and marries hor, and, takes a stand as a social reformer. The one real thing in his hypocritii-al life is his real love for his young wife. He organises a police raid on the hall at which; Daire is"employed, and- in securing evidence brings the girl he Iw wronged to his house. Rosa, on heaving Daire's accusation, of her husband, falls dead from- heart failure. During the raid Davids is mortally wounded, and in his dying moments he tries to make amends by marrying Daire. Ths additional films, will include a fine scenic of "Bbthaland" some amusing comedies, and a late Pathe Gazette. Motueka will be visited to-night and Richmond on Thursdav.

PEOPLE'S PICTURES.

An attractive list of new films will be shown at the Theatre Royal to-night. The ,leading attraction being the thiid of the great Metro films to be shown at the Theatre Royal. "The Vampire/' which is the title, has Mme. Petrova in the leading role, with an all-star cast. The Story: Jeanne is accidentally injured -while touring in an automabile. In her convalescence she meets a married man who realises he can only win Shelby offering marriage. An illegal mar riage ceremony is jperformed, and late, the man abandons Jeanne, who become an outcast and a mian-hater. Seeking ■refuge in Europe, Jeanne meets on ?. steamer two men outcasts, and they a'.i conspire against the world. Jeanne becomes notorious as a scheming and heartless woman, and the epithet "Vampire'' is applied to her. She enmeshes a young attache of the American legation, and after securing valuable documents frox "himi, she finds she is in love with him. One of her co-conspirators, whom she met on the steamer, comes into posses sion of these secret papers, and when trying to get the papers back to return them, to tile attache, Jeanne discovers that the young attache is the son ofi the man responsible for her ruin . Her old hate is awakened again. Events bring all back to New York. Complications involve Jeanne with sbot-h the father and son and the young .man's fiancee. The young man breaks his engagement, declares his love for Jeanne, and his father is forced to give his consent to their marriage. A dramatic scene is introduced when the father discovers that Jeanne is none other than the woman he married illegally and deserted. The father, accuses Jeanne of being an adventuress. She wrings from him a confession before his sou that he had ccetived her. The son throws Csinventi-it to the winds and decides to marry Jeanne, but he is prevented by the woman herself, who is threatened with exposure of the she played in securing the State documents. Jeanne brings about a reconciliation between the young attache and his fiancee, realising that a haippy marriage could never have- resulted if she had married him herself while he had full knowledge of the history of her past.
