THE FIGHT FOR KOVEL
BATTLE NOW DEVELOPING.
STRONG ENEMY CONCENTRATIONS. ENTIRE GERMAN FRONT THREATENED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) ' PETROGRAD. July 31. The enemy are concentrating at Kovel, where the battle is now developing and becoming the fiercest of the campaign. The battle for' Kovel threatens th? entire German front. Hence the enemy nghting like demons, and refusing to surrender even when surrounded, preferring the Russian bayonets. The fortifications in front of Brody were extremely strong, and. the Russians therefore attacked on the flank, where the Austrians did not expect a big offensive, owing to the swollen river and marshes. A communique states that our detachments continue to fortifv themselves on the left bank of the Stokhod. We continue to advance at Kovel an I Brody. Southward of the Dniester we are pursuing the enemy.
