LOCAL ELECTIONS
POSTPONEMENT PROPOSAL DEFEATED. (By Telegraph.—'Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A clause in the War Regulation Bill provided for the postponement for one year of all local elections, which irii the ordinajry course would 'be .held before August next. This gave rise to some discussion on Saturday. . Mr McCallum moved an amendment to the effect that the postponement should be optional 1 -with each, local body . concerned. Mr Massey said he could not accept the amendment. He read a telegram from a Mayor expressing approval of the clause on the ground that, the present members of local bodies were in close touch with patriotic work. Mr Massey said the matter was not a policy one in the ordinary sense of the word, and he, said, he ivas prepared to take a "vote on the clause. Mr T. A. H. Field (Nelson) opposed both the clause and Mi* McCallumV amendment. After further discussion the clause was struck out on the voices.
