BELGIAN FUND
A CITY COUNCIL CONTRIBUTION A telegram received bythe Rev: J". H. MacKenzie from tihe Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs in reference to the Nelson quota of the Dominion Belgian Fund was forwardled byi the former to the City Council and considered last evening. Thetelegram stated' that thcire was" a shortage of. £214 in the Nelson quota for Joily. ~„•■» The Waimea County Council has WW its quota for June and. July, amounting to £lO7 16s 4d. The Mayor said the Council had" never contributed to the Belgian Fund. lOr. 'Hampson moved that the Council make up the difference. Or. Mercer seconded the motion. Cr. iMoffatt said their obligations to 1/he Belgians were very great, and the - Council should do something. Cr. Hampson .said- the 'Council had given nothing. The Council's contributions .towards war funds had been very small. " " " The Mayor said' they should have made provision for kligse things by striking a higher rate. The Council was getting hopelessly behind: in its finance., The motion was carried without dissent. . The Waimea County Council has been, contributing its share regularly, and the City Council has now recognised the claims of the Belgians. The other, local bodies> -however, are not doing anything to' help this fund, but if, approached' again, might feel disposed to -assist.',
