RECENT FLOOD DAMAGE. PETITION TO CITY COUNCIL. At hist niiilit's meeting of tlie City Council a petition was received from residents of Brook-street ami Seymour Avenue (being heavy losers by the '■ <■- cent flood in'the Brook Stream), asking the Council's assistance to afford protection from future floods, and further damage. It was asked that a substantial barrage be erected at the beginning of the wash-out. and also on the opposite side of the stream. Cr Piper strongly urged that sand bass be placed along the banks and willows planted. Cr Hampson said it was private prooertv, and the Council had nothing to do with it. If the Council # established a precedent where would it end? They all sympathised with the residents, but in the state of the Council's finances the Council could not make a general grant to all who had lost property.
