CATHEDRA' SPIRE TO BE REMOVED
OWING TO WEAKENING OF SUPPORTS. Acting- on instructions from the 'Cathedral Vestry, an architect has made a thorough examination of the Cathedral, audi reports- that owing to a weakening of the supports- from decay the spire should be removed. It is understood that in accordance "with the architect's report the tower will be taken down as soon as possible. There is no need, of course, of fear that the tower will collapse, but the extent of the weakening is such as to warrant timely steps to be taken. The examining architect has further reported that the life of the present Cathedral cannot extend beyond a few years. Repairs and renovations, it is gathered, will prove temporarily, effective, but the building .pf a new Church is a matter that must J>e faced in the near future.
