FIFTY YEARS AGO
(From the Mail of 22nd July. 1866.) The public await with considerable anxiety tho result of the negotiations now pending between certain Australian contractors and the Nelson Provincial Government in reference to the construction of a railway from Nelson to Cob■ den. It is stated on authority that contractors are to be found who will construct the railway in question-on t'c conditions offered by the Provincial Government, viz., the alienation of a certain quantity of the waste lands- of the province. It is also affirmed the General Government will sanction the resolutions passed in favour of_ the scheme at the last sitting of '. the Provincial Council, and introduce into the House of Assembly a measure that- shall authorise the alienation of the lands of the province for railway purposes.
