FIFTY YEARS AGO
{From the Mail of 20th July, 1866.) {Before J. Poynter, Esq.. R.M.. his Honour the Superintendent, and a full Benci. of Magistrates.) .Richard (Burgess, Thomas Kelly, John Joseph Sullivan and William Levy were brought up for examination this morning-. ~ The public excitement appeared to have greatly subsided. The Provincial Hiall was not so densely crowded as on some former occasions, but the galleries were filled with ladies. No doubt the admirable photographs of the prisoners •which have been published have tended to lessen the public curiosity. Sullivan looks thin and' care-worn, but the other prisoners do net appear much altered. Sullivan was placed in the dock first and without irons. Tho other three were heavily ironed as usual. (From the Mail of 21st July, 1866.) The M. Press has the following : —The man taken up on r-us-picion by Sergeant Emerson, about a fortnight since, as one of the murderers of Mr Dobson at the West Coast and afterwards charged with escaping from the Gaol at Greymouth. was discharged, as no evidence was forthcoming as to his connection with either. If the poor fellow is innocent, this is a very hard case, and is only justifiable from the desire of the authorities to watch narrowly every suspicious character who may be found at this time of excitement, in a, district so near the locality of the late tragedy at the Maungatapn.
