TELEPHONE SYSTEM.
(To the Editor. \ Sir.—l read in your correspondence olumn a complaint "against the telephone ■■•ervice in. Nelson. Your correspondent •oncludes his wail bv asking "Cannot omething be done?" Of course somehing can be done, hut what is the use f doing it when r,o one wants it. The :hambe~r of Commerce seems to be quite ontent with the existing state of af'airs. The City Council and staff are oo busv drawing plans for a bridge over he Maltai at Trafalgar-street, and when hat is done thev are due to fix a road >n Britannia. Heights so that they can art the overdraft away. When they iave finished your correspondent won't vant a telephone —lie will be usiiKT rireless. The Hospital Board? Well it vould be hardly fair to trouble them -hen every one'of them is engaged at he new Hospital helping to put the roo? in in time to save losing a Government nbsidv. Who's left? The business -ien : "Thev don't want a better service. f thev did thev vwaikl agitate, and vhat's''more, thev would agitate until hev got what they wanted. but the iresent svsteni is good enough for them. V> whv 'bother? ' When the present 'ust Otlice was built provision was made 'i it for the installation of the metallic ircuit svstem (which would obviate the lefects 'complained of by your correspondent), in fact there only remains th; •utside work to complete this system, vhich is being provided in other towns vith more capacity for hustling than we re cursed with. 'We cannot expect the Postmaster-General to come hat in hand 1 .0 ask tho Nelson business men would hev like a better telephone system. The °.M.G. is a. wise man, and he considrs that when Nelson business men want \ newer system thev will ask for it : nd if thev r don't ask for it the inference s they don't want it. In conclusion -ny advice to your correspondent is to to on waiting-, " something may happen, 'n fact, I think the Beautifying Society's due to wake uo next year, and it night want to alter the telephone sysem. Thanking you, Mr Editor, for pace.—l am, etc.. CINDER SIFTER.
