NELSON'S TELEPHONES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —One of the things that struck me, as a new- arrival in Nelson some months ago, and which has been striking nu- harder ever since, is the telephone system of this fair city. Judging by my experience. I should say that in/ business is Well known all over the district, because lam certain it would be impossible not to over-hear the conversations that go on. During this afternoon I have used the telephone about a dozen times, and on every occasion I have been the unwilling listener to some conversation or other. For instance S—--was talking to Mrs H to-day about. a motor car, and just as I was waiting for another response to my call I heav-.l "Hello ! You're a nice one! Where have you been? What? Staying with who? "Oh ! the one just married- What a time you must !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! went the bell" in my ear, and possibly someone will say "Serve you right !" Seriously speaking, Mr Editor, the telephone is not much use for either business or pleasure when conversations can be "tapped"' so readily. I do not know of a place in the Dominion so badly off as we are in Nelson. Cannot something be done? I am, etc., H. G. HILL. Mount-street, July 18th.
