OBITUARY
TE HANOI PAL
The death occurred at Opotiki on the 20th inst. of Te Rangi Pai (Mrs Howie). Te Rangi Pai was born in 1868, being a daughter of Colonel T. W. Porter, C.B. Her mother was a Maori of high rank. After being educated at the Ladies' College, Napier, she entered upon a ■musical career. She sang in the principal concert halls in England, and before Queen "Victoria, to whom she was presented. For some time past she lived quietlyi on her property at Mangaroa, and! six months ago, owing to ill-health, removed to Opotiki. The remains were interred at Kopuakoeae, Mangaroa, near Te Kaka. For some years Mr and Mrs Howie lived in Nelson, the former being in the Customs Department, and Nelsonians had many opportunities of hearing Mrs Howie's magnificient contralto voice, she -being ever ready to assist at local concerts. Deceased was a sister of Mrs Fredi. Hamilton, of Nelson.
