A tragic incident is thus recorded m a Westport paper :—John Richard Diamond, aged 10 vears, adopted son of Mr Hugh McLaughlin, the well-known carrier, of Westport, and known as Jack McLaughlin, was accidentally shot by William Dickson, sons of Mr John Dickson, of Tauranga Bay, at 4.30 p.m. mi Sunday. It appears that earlier in the day Mr Dickson loaded his gun w : th the intention of shooting at a hawk, but subsequently went to attend to some farm affairs. Later lie returned' to the house and left the gun behind the door and went off to muster sheep. He unfortunately forgot to withdraw the cartridge. The lads Diamond and Dickson, picking it up, pulled the trigger, not knowing that the gun was loaded. It went off," and the bullet blew away the lower .part of Diamond's jaw, !Killing him instantly. In the issue of the "British-Australa-sian of April 6th, published in London, appears a reproduction of two pictures which appeared in the French newspaper Excelsior, showing Australian troops landed in France. Beneath the pictures is the statement: "The Excelsior says that the troops have come in -very great numbers and have'received the warmest. welcome from the citizens.' Seeing that Australians, the most vitally concerned in the movements of the Ahzacs>, were not allowed to know the facts till a few;, days ago, Senator Pearce, Acting-Prime Minister, ■ was shown the reproductions recently, and asked 1 if there was ariy: reason why matter relating to Australian troops published in England cosild not at the same time have !been made available to Australians. He expressed surprise, and said that it was apparently a case in which the censor had been caught napping. The Minister did not add any comment on the fact that a German newspaper published on March 11th had announced the presence of theAn c tra]ian Siesre Bricrade in France. Renewed, complaints have been made of late as to the dirty condition of bank notes in circulation in New Zealand, inquiries nnde by the "Wellington Post into this matter go to show that the bank* are fiillv sensible of the unsatisfactory condition of the .notes, >but are not afble to help themselves at the moment. Prio- to the outbreak of war ereafc difficulty was experienced'- in obtaining supplies of notos from the printers, bat the difficulty has been tremendously accentuated since the commencement of hostilities. The banks, it is understood, have, been -pressin? printers to expedite the despatch of neu- notes, long on order, more particularly since the Government made bank notes legal.tender, which accounted' for a- great expansion of the note issue. Pending- the receipt- of further- supplies of niw notes, the old notes have bad to be reissued over and over again, with the result that they &re admittedly not in the condition that they O'aghk to be.
