NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Nelson Education 'Board was held at the Board's room to-davt. Present: Messrs G. H. Gothard .(Chairman), W. Lock, E. D>. Scantlebury, F. W. O. Smith, H. J. iHarris, W. Baigent, T. Symes, D. J. Williams, W. N. Franklyn. The accounts presented were recommended for payment, with the exception of .Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board Account, £3l 4s 6d, for fumigating Nelson schools, -which was ordered, to be referred back! to the 'Hospital Board, as being excessive. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE. Mr F. C. J. Cockbnrn, Director of the Nelson Technical School, reported that the second term of the session opened on May 15th. A number of new students have bsen enrolled for various subjects, including Commercial, Domestic, Art and Engineering. The attendance at most of the classes is satisfactory. The telegraphy class, although having a fairlylarge roll number, is the least eatisfactory. In the matter of attendance, the Director asked if the Board intended to put into force the rule relating to'the nonfulfilment of the conditions re attendance of free place pupils. He this, because he believed a request had been received' from the Department for information upon the matter. The following is the rule referred to : —' 'Failing illness or removal from the district each free place student must make at least 80 per cent of the possible attendances in each of the subjects taken., or become liable for the fees for such In reference to the position still left vacant >bv the removal 1 of Mr Thompson' it was to" be hoped that the Board would endeavour to meet the wishes of the Carpenters' Union, who had, hs understood made an offer to make a sma.l donation to the School. It -was, ho presumed, onlv a small amount, but it was gTati'fving"to know that such a body was prepared to recognise the usefulness and possibilities of the School, and it would set an excellent example to others. The Engineering Class was progressing =;?.tisfactorily. It -was decided, on the motion* of JVLr Lock, seconded by Mr Smith, that dur-ing-the period of the war, the Board are agreeable to allow their application for a for storage battery at the West£ort Technical Schools, to stand over.
