WHEAT GROWING
REMARKS BY GROWERS. (United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. •At the Canterbury- Provincial Conference of Farmers' Unions to-day Mr George Sheat moved : "That this branch is of opinion that the Government, in the interests of the people of the Dominion. should have placed a sufficient tariff on the importation, of wheat and flour during war-time to ensure for farmers a minimum price of 5s per bushel." Mr Sheat quoted the figures of Mr Atkinson:, of Springfield, for putting in, taking out, threshing, delivering, etc.. a. 50-aore pa-dock of ■wheat. The expenditure was £277 Is Id to svuw 50 acres of wheat, v.'hich ■went 29 bushels to the acre. The best offer he could get was 3s lOd pe;r bushel, and the crot> netted him £277 18s 4d. He had 14s 3d r for his total profits.'The speaker said wheat-growers in Canterbury had not had a. square deal, and though he did not intend to criticise the •Government, he felt he .should' point out the danger of New Zealand becoming a non-wheat producing country. He contended that the popular idea that farmers were making fortunes out of wheat was entirely erroneous. Mr Sheafs- remit was carried.
