GERMAN NIGHT OFFENSIVE

A communique says that the Germans tinder cover of a gas certain attacked westward of Nauvarin. Our curtain - of fire drove them back to the trenches. The Germans attempted a powerful night .offensive eastward of Mort Homme. There was a hand to hand struggle and after heavy sacrifices they , gradually penetrated village of Cnmiers and also a trench immediately westward. Over' three 'divisions attacked. Equally violent bombardments and attacks took place at Haudromont and Douaumont. Despite the enemy's desperation and carelessness after amaz<J ing sacrifices, they only succeeded in occupying sections eastward of Fort Douaumont. Attacks elsewhere were broken.
