NAVAL CANDIDATES

NEW ZEALAND APPLICANTS. It is possible to obtain, nomination for I :adetships in the Poyal Navy' through J ;he New Zealand "Government. Several ' "New Zealand boys have already received ?uch cadetships, and are now undergoing training in the Royal Naval College at 3sborne and Dartmouth and on board. , training cruisers.. ' These cadets must enter the Naval College in January, May," or September in each year, and must be 'between, the ages of 13 years and four months and lo years and eight months on the first day of the month preceding the month of entry. ■Candidates- must be ''of nivra European descent, must be natural born or naturalised 'British subjects, and must pass a medical,and a qualifying examination in education subjects prior to nomination.'' . . "n Naval cadets undergo a course of instruction in the shore training colleges, for four years at Osborne and 'Dartmouth, and subsequently for a period on • . board a special training cruiser, and are then sent to sea as midshipmen. The fees payable by the parents during the training at the colleges are £75 annum, in addition to the cost- of clothing, sports, books, etc. J>uring his training at sea, until the cadet reaches the *ank of sub-lieutenant, he must receive a pnvate allowance of £SO per annum, and thereafter v£2o : 'per.annum as long as he remains An acting sub-lieutenant. Two nominations in each year are received for New Zealand candidates, and are open to boys who belong to families resident in the 'Dominion. Full particulars -as to condition of nomination and qualifying examination may be obtained from the 'Director of Education. This month Master Peter D. Hall, son of Mr J. D. Ball, of 'Middleton, Christchurch, was successful iii • passing the necessary examinations* and in'obtaining a nomination as a naval cadet for the British Navy.
