The Harbourmaster (Captain H. Collins) reported that, the trade of the Port for the month of December showed a decrease in tonnage compared with the corresponding month of 1914. due to the ocean-goin e steamer omitting to make the usual December visit to Nelson. During the month 152 vessels entered and left the Port—29 Union boats, 100 small steamers, 22 sailing vessels. and one intercolonial steamer, with a total tonnace of 30,698. against 35,042 for the month ending December. 1914. l*rom December Bth to 24th, 300 tons of stone, had been placed on the mole, making a total to date of 2903 tons. There was now sufficient stone on hand to do all necessary repairs to the molo, together with a reserve of about 700 or 800 tons. Work in connection with the replacing of stone along the top of the mole was being proceeded with from 4th inst. In regard to the Signal Staff at the Lighthouse. he statod that as it would take up the time of one man if the staff remained in its present position . ho recommended its removal to a position on the south side of thp mole, neax tho new entrance. One of the- pilot crewwas required "to go across daily to the mole for the purpose of attending to the light, and it would be possible for hint to attend to the tidal signals at the same time. . In his annnual report- Captain Collins stated: —During the year 1765 vessels entered and left, the Port» including six ocean-going steamers, one intercolonial steamer, and eight intercolonial sailing vessels, the total register tonnage being 349.203. against 331.702 for 1914. an increase of 7501 tons for 1915. All buoys, beacons. etc., had been thoroughly overhauled and painted, and moorings renewed .where required. Ihe whole of the plant belonging to the pilot service was in good condition and working order.
