AMSTERDAM, Dec. 31. Tho Austrian reply controverts the American -version of the Ancona outrage, and disclaims responsibility for the loss of lives which was dne to the Ancona's attempt to escape and. the crew's undisciplined conduct. For example,' they overturned a boat. But the reply admits that the -submarine commanded did not snve sufficient tiino for the panic-strickeh passengers to • disembark before torpedoing the vessel, and -he should not have refused assistance to the distressed .people. He. has been punished, and Austria js willing to indemnify the American loss due to the actual sinking. She trusts that this regrettable incident has been cleared up. THE REPLY ACCEPTABLE. - WASHINGTON, Dec. 31. , The Government is satisfied with Austria's reply relative'.to. the sinking of the Ancona, but .will despatch fiitui*e notes pointing out that .proper notice ought to be.given to merchantmen.
