CHRISTMAS TRAINS

PROTEST FROM E2v"GLvE MEN(United Pbess Association.) CHBISTCHURCH, jjec 29. The following letter has been addressed to the Minister of Railways by the General Secretary of the New Zealand Locomotive Engine-drivers', Firemen, and Cleaners' Association: — "I am directed to draw your attention to the increasing .passenger trafficon Christmas Day, and to make the request .that you will look into the matter of reducing the number of trains run- on this day to'a" minimum. Members of thi_s union consider every effort should be made to allow them to have this day in their own home, and as a section *of the public seems to have no consideration for others, * and seems intent upon travelling upon this day as long as there are facilities to travel'with, we feel more than justified in asking you to take" some action towards conserving, this day for the employees, as one upon which the public cannot claim our services- Many members of this union, look upon this'day as being .the most precious day of the'year to them; and 'theirfamilies. It is considered that you are to a large extent a party to this deprivation, by authorising the running of such a large number of trains on this day. May'we therefore request that the train services be considerably reduced on this "particular day, and brought into line with Sundav services." ,
