WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the W&imea County Council yesterday., the following additional business was transacted : COR-RESPO N T D ENCE. Correspond emce wes read and, d'ealt with as follows : From., Public Work's Department ra exemption' of Ed ward's- Road. Lower Moutere, from section 117 of the Tub- j lie \\onks Act. —Received. j Mir R. P. Hudson.. M.P., wrote in reference to the deadlock in the expenditure of Government grants towards the erection of certain bridges in the county, arising from the Council wishing to carry out the works with the Council staff while the Public Works Departmentwanted its staff to do the. work. Mr Hudson stated that he had had interviews with the Minister of Public "Works and with the Chief Engineer, and suggested that a deputation go to Wellington to. meet the Minister, or that he- (the member) should come" to Nelson and meet representatives of the Council. The Chairman stated that the Hon. W. Fraser, when in Nelson, had- entirely agreed with the attitude taken up by the Council, that the Council staff should carry out the work. • Cr. Best and the County Engineer endorsed the Chairman's statement-. It. was resolved that the. Chairman and the Engineer proceed to Wellington to interview the Minister of Public Works. The Town Clerk -wrote as to the County Council's contribution towards Belgian relief, stating that the amounton a population basis would be £53 18s 2d a. month. The Council had agreed months ago to pay its contribution, and had simply asked the City Council what the county's .share would be. It was I agreed to immediately pay the firstmonthly • contribution cf £52 18s 2d.

A number of applications for renewals of slaughterhouse licenses were approved.

F. Carlton, Timaru, and J. R. Bruce, Timaru, complained of the action of the Council in issuing summonses against, them for rates—Bs 9d .in one instance, and ,13s 5d in the. other. Both writers stated that it was the first, summons they had received in their lives, and thought that "reminders" might have -been given before such "high-handed action" was

taken against them.—Received. The Secretary, Stoke Progressive Association, 4 wrote re .installing electric light at Saxton's Read.. Orphanage Road, Hotel corner,.- Marsden's Creek" Bridge, Poo'rman's Valley Road, .and Rocks Road. —Approved, except the- light, at Marsden's Creek Bridge

Resolved that the Council's seal be affixed to the deed; of dedication of the Stoke Cemeterv.

From D. G. Barnes, re state of K-sds, Bronte. —Letter to be forwarded to the Upper Moutere Road Board. From Messrs Snodgrass- and ' M : lner complained that County workmen had damaged their fence, Moutere Hills, by throwing material from the cutting on to it.—Matter already attended to.

McCarthy, Baton, waited on the Council regarding road from the Clarke river to the main Baton roadi, for which theTe'was a 'Government grant of £IOO, and . requested that the construction be expedited-. ' It was resolved that the chairman, Cr. Drummoiid, and. the Engineer visit the locality , and report. DEPUTATION. Mr C. E. Lowe waited oh the Council with reference to metalling of subdivision a-oad's through Tasinau Wdst (for- [ merly known as Flaxmore Estate), Central Moutere.—lt. was resolved; that a deputation of the whole Council inspect the new roads on July 17th. with conditional power to act..' GENERAL. The chairman : reported on his visit to Tasman in regard to a. ranger, and jit was resolved that his action be endorsed. .... A special meeting was held to consider the balance-sheet.—Resolved that the haJance-slieet be adopted. Resolved, on the .motion of the chair-, man, that- not exceeding 10 chain of Poley bridge road (Lower"Moutere) be gravelled.

' Cr Corde'r brought- up the matter of metal from Mr 11. Dodson's quarry, stating that Mr Dpdson was willing to accept £5 in full settlement.—Agreed to pay this amount. Cr Macmahon referred to a small deviation. to avoid a- steep bank, required on the Motupiko old schoolbouee road.— Work to be done. Cr Macmahon. asked that the metalling ab the foot of the Dovedaki hill road near Brandy Creek de done. A small deviation near Mr Jordan's -would be a. great advantage. "In reply to a question, the Engineer said that Brandy Creek bridge would be started in probably six -weeks' time.

The chairman, referred' to the hy-law regarding heavy traffic during, tli£. winter months. He remarked that hundreds of pounds of Government and Council money had been spent- on the Dovedale main road, -which wa_s now reported to be in a- deplorable state. On his motion the Engineer was instructed to -furnish a special .report on Dovedata road at the next meeting. Cr Best drew attention to the splash on tl*> Apple'by road near the railway station, and moved that- the ■ Richmond -Borough .Council be written to on- the subject. Carried.

It was resolved that- Mr Hage'n be paid the- balance due, in respect of a horse impounded and sold' by the poundkeeper at Spring Grove. Mr D. J. Rouse and others presented a. pet ition for a. -Government. stock bridge over the. Tadmor river near the railway station.—Resolved to endorse- the petition.

Cr Tunnicliife movcid -that the chairman, Cr Best, himself, and tire Engineer be deputed to .inspect certain small requirements in Brightwatei-, "with -power to act.—Agreed to. Cr. Corder, on helialf of workmen on the "Wangamoa hill, made a request for an extra shilling per day as camping allowance. in -\ir-fw of tho distance the work lay from their homes. The work would last about three weeks' . only.— Agreed to make the allowance. Cr Drammond moved that patching -with fine gravel be made on the Tadmor main-road.—.Agreed to. ■ Cr Tunnicliife moved that- hanks be, cut down at the cost of a day- or two's work at- Burnt- Ridge Gully; Trass Valley.—Agreed to.
