SERIOUS FIGHTING IN GALICIA.
WHILST little reliance can be placed in the Gerjnah and Austrian reports of recent fighting in Galicia, it is nevertheless evident that the Russians have ■been severely checked. Some little time ago it • was estimated that the' Austro<Jferman strength in Galicia must be something in the region of 2,000,000 men. 1 This indicates the . im-
portance of the battle: that is reported to foe proceeding. Having pushed over the Carpathians,, mainly through the Dukla Pass, and* extended down on the plains of Hungary, -where an endeavour has been made to take the Austrian j troops fighting in Galicia at Stryi in the rear, the Russian right flapk in Galicia has been subjected to severe attack. It -\yill be seen that • the Russians, if decisively beaten in this quarter, would h a -v 0 their line .pierced'.in a vulnerable point. It. has been reported that ■ the Jaslov Dukla region has been conquered by the enemy, but it does not seem possible for this to be true. It would ra&an a definite breaking of t!ie Russian line between, the Dukla Pase and tho West Galician front. It is hardly likely that the Russians have been so seriously placed as that. ■ Still the position in Galicia, is'by no means reassuring. It should be clearly understood, however, that the whole position is still very uncertain.
