EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING

Following business was transacted at the monthly meeting of the Education Board yesterday after we went to press: r It resolved that after balancepf Committees have been-present-ed.. txK the meetings <?f householders,, the books and papers in with must be sent on to the secretary of the Education Board for audit purposes. It was resolved to forward a copy of the Department's letter in reference to proposed side school at Riwaka on to the Committee for an expression of opinion. With regard to the overcrowding of Hampden-street- School, it was resolved that the re-arrangement of classes as proposed by Chief Inspector Harkness be adopted; and that he prepare a report for the Department, pointing- out that the arrangements could only be tempor-i ary. It was resolved that tenders be invited for improving school ground at MiUerton. I The Chief Inspector reported on proposed household school at Taffytown (Kaiamea) - and it was resolved that a teacher be advertised for. The Board resolved to approve of the draft regulations governing members' expenses as forwarded bv the Department. A letter from the Town Clerk, Richmond, re buildine by-laws was received. dealt with..as follows: Summerlea, painting, D. P. Mums, £ls 15s, accepted; Fern Flat, painting, W. Bast ran, £11" 15s 6d, accepted ; HappjValley, residence, no tender received; Appleby, . painting interior and erection shelter shed, held over until following dayPakawau, painting, John Nelson, £l4 ss, accepted.--- - Applications were dealt -with as follows : Batnham, additional room, held over for a ■ month ; Charleston, chimney cowl and, "wood and coal shed, £7 granted ; Charleston, fencing residence, further information to be obtained ; Riwaka, erection of boundary fence, held over; Motueka,- re play ground accommodation, received ; Motueka, payment of account for. flagpole, referred back to Committee for explanation. It was resolved that Rev. Willis be granted £2 10s for supervising erection of school at Murchison. The Board adjourned until to-day.

TO-DAY'S BUSINESS The Board resumed this morning, there being present: Messrs Smith (chairman) Baigent, - Scantlebury, Franklyn, Svmes, Harris, and Gothard. The Capleston Committee was granted £3 10s for necessary repairs and drainage, and £6 to the Denniston Commit.tee for school equipment.

; TEA CHER SHIPS. Applications for teacherships •were dealt with as follows :—Waimangaroa, head teacher (7 applications), Mr S. C. T. _ Shedden to. be recommended for appointment temporarily for six months; .Richmond 2nd. assistant- (8 applicants), names of misses K. V. Shirtliff and Ethel I Hill- to he forwarded to the committee; Granity, 3rd. assistant, (13 applications) name of Miss G. M. Rowley to he forwarded; Bainham, Ist assistant (5 applications) name of Miss A. W. Gibbs to be forwarded; Birchfield, assistant (10 applications) Miss Jessie I.- McDonald appointed temporarily; Brightwater, asistant (15 applications) name of Miss Dement to be forwarded to committee for appointment - Colling wood, assistant (7 applications) name of Miss Z. Lt. Turner to "he forwarded tc committee for appointment; "YVai-it-i. assistant (22 applications) names oi Misses P. M. Thompson and K. M. Brown to be forwarded; Takafea, 2nd. assistant (-11 applications) name of Miss K. M- Brown to be forwarded to the committee for appointment; Globe -HilJ, sole teacher (5 applications) name of Mi S. F. Morris to be forwarded to committee for appointment; Wairangi house hold school (2 applications), Miss M. 15. Harford appointed : Reefton, pupil teacher, Miss Jean Montgomerie (only application) appointed.

INSPECTORS' REPORTS. The inspectors reported, as follows or, schools inspected In the Westport, Reefton, and Wakapuaka districts :—Karamea, satisfactory to good; Arapito. sat isfactoryj Little Wanganui, satisfactory; TJmere, satisfactory. In his inspection reports, the Chief Inspector, referring to the physical culture classes held at Westport in Febrnary, spoke in praise of the good -work dctae, riV 49 the high appreciation ■shown "by the-teachers of the instruction given. Practically all the teachers attending the classes,, said the inspectdr, were now .patting into operation in their -schools what they had .been taught at the instructional classes. In regard to the classes to be held in Nelson, the inspector said thai Mr Moore, the instructor, proposed to commence them on Mav 24th. » The small attendances at the three Vv were referred to, the opinion being expressed that i° such a district ihis state' of affairs should not exist.

Arising out of the report it was resolved that the Birchfield committee's attention he called to certain matters requiring attention, that an application be made to the Government for a grant for additional accommodation at Hector school: that the Granity committee be authorised to submit tenders for painting walls, of teacher's residence; that r McDonald be asked to -prepare ■plans and specifications for extending Westport High School.

GENERAL. The Appleby committee was authorised to obtain estimates for painting and repairs at Redwood's Valley. It was resolved that Miss Stoddart be transferred from the Motueka District High School to the head-teachership at Rockville. The Department of Education forwarded particulars for the Council of Education election, two members of which are to be appointed by the Education Boards of each island. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Gothard, it was resolved' that Mr Franklyn be nominated by the Board -for one of the South Island seats. The chairman said Mr Franklyn was the oldest member of the Board, and was well and favourably known throughout the Island. It was resolved that the boundaries of Central Takaka school district be adjusted as requested by the chairman of the school committee. Appointments were confirmed as follows :—Miss I. White, Pakawau; Miss E. Lewis, Matariki; Miss M. Lewis, Brightwater; Miss M. McCarthy; Waitahn. Following resignations were accepted : Miss N. Hagen, Takaka ; Miss E. Noble, Birchfielu : Miss M. Lewis, Bainham ; Miss C. A. Morrison, Wai-iti: Miss A. juennessey, Burnett's Face; Miss I. V". Dement; Murchison ; Miss F. E. Shone, Collingwood : Miss "VV. A. Satchel!, Gra/nitv: Miss J. Armstrong, Sarau. The Board then adjourned.
