"In connection with the fire at the Viceegal 'residence in Auckland last week, „ne "Star" remarks that interest m the Northern Government House, both as a .'building and an institution, has been maintained by the university site controversy. Four years ago it was proposed to practically demolish the present building, and establish in its place a university. So intent was the Government 6n carrying out this scheme that the Vice-Reg*al residence -was actually stripped of "its furniture, which was either sold tjr railed to Wellington. A heated controversy followed, and the outcome was that it was resolved that Government House should stay, while .meantime the university question isas shelved. The Vice-Regal residence was iaccordingly re-equipped, so that most .of the furniture was practically new.

Nelson, Moate & Co. were awarded first and special prizes for blended teas, against- all competitors, at the Auckland ' Exhibition; also first and special prizes for their collection of Ceylon, Indian, and China teas, and first prizes for their Nelmoa coffee and Cocoa respectively. So far back as 1882, at the New Zealand International Exhibition, this firm was awarded the only gold and first silver medals for blended teas, in competition with Australasia. The house of Nelson, Moate is now in the 35th year of its existence, its headquarters being in Wellington, and there are branches in Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin, Hobart, and Mr. H. Nelson, the founder, still takes the leading part in its management.
